5. The Second Meet ( part 1 )

SHANAYA'S POV :

As I stepped through the door and into the warmth of my home, the events of the day seemed to replay over and over in my mind. The encounter with him—him, the mystery man—lingered like a whisper at the back of my mind. I couldn't quite shake the image of his eyes, the sharpness in his words, the way he seemed to carry himself with such intensity. But I brushed it off. Maybe it was just a brief moment in time, and I had to focus on more important things.

I pushed my shoes off and let out a deep breath, collapsing onto the couch. My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out to see a message from Isha.

Isha: "Are you ready for the party? Makeup appointment at 6, don't be late!"

I sighed, looking at the clock. It was already 4:30 PM. I had just enough time to get ready. The party was tonight—it was just an casual business party , that of course , kartik and ishaan wanted their precious sister to attend.

I ran my fingers through my hair and thought about the moment before. The way his eyes had lingered for that split second, as though he saw something in me... Something I wasn't sure even I understood. Maybe I was just reading too much into it.

Shanaya, stop thinking about him. I shook my head, mentally scolding myself.

---

The next day, I was up early, bustling around in excitement and nerves. I knew tonight was going to be unforgettable, and I was determined to make an impression. I spent the next few hours with Isha, picking out our outfits and getting ready for the party.

By the time Isha arrived, we were both feeling the adrenaline of getting glammed up. Isha's laugh echoed through my room as she barged in, her eyes already twinkling with excitement.

"You ready to blow everyone away tonight?" she teased, already slipping into her dress.

"I hope so," I laughed, trying to calm my nerves.

The clock ticked down, and we started with makeup. Isha had always been the expert in this department, and I was just happy to let her work her magic. She applied foundation, eyeshadow, and a little bit of glitter, carefully enhancing the features that were already there. When she finally finished my look with a bold lip and smoky eyes, I felt like a completely different person—like someone who could take on the world.

---

Isha: "Shanaya, you look incredible!"

I looked at myself in the mirror, barely recognizing the girl staring back at me. My hair was styled perfectly, my makeup flawless, and the dress I had chosen clung to my body in all the right ways, a deep crimson red that accentuated my curves and made me feel both powerful and elegant.

The party was in full swing when we arrived, the music pulsating and the crowd buzzing with excitement. Isha and I walked in together, our heels clicking on the floor, and all eyes turned to us. The room seemed to still for a moment as people took in our entrance. A few people gasped, some whispered, and I could see the admiration in their eyes.

I felt a rush of pride, knowing I had worked hard to get here, and for the first time in a long time, I was proud of myself. I knew this night would be remembered forever—just for the mark I would leave on everyone who saw me tonight.

As we made our way into the center of the room, I couldn't help but notice a few glances from across the room. One, in particular, lingered longer than the others. I turned my head, meeting his eyes for a moment before he quickly looked away.

Him. The same man from last night.

But I couldn't let it distract me now. I had a party to enjoy, friends to celebrate with, and a night that was all about me. For now, I would let the world see the Shanaya I had become—the one who was strong, beautiful, and ready to face whatever came her way.

The atmosphere at the party was electric, the air thick with laughter, music, and the faint scent of perfume and cologne. Shanaya and Isha made their way through the crowd, weaving between groups of friends, and taking in all the familiar faces. It was the kind of night where everything felt possible, and for once, everything seemed just right.

Isha, ever the life of the party, pulled me onto the dance floor. "Come on, Shanaya, let's show them how it's done!"

I laughed, feeling the beat of the music seep into my veins. The bass thumped, and the crowd moved in unison as the lights flickered in time with the rhythm. The beat made me feel alive, free. The world outside seemed so far away, and all that mattered was the present moment.

I was having fun. Real fun. No worries about the future, no distractions, just the pure, unfiltered joy of dancing and laughing with friends. For a while, I was able to forget about everything—him, the uncertainty of the future, and all the heavy thoughts swirling in my mind.

As the night wore on, I found myself standing with Isha near the drinks table, taking a breather from the intense dancing. The music played softly in the background now, and the mood was starting to wind down. I could feel the warmth of the room, the glow of chandeliers hanging above, and the comfort of being surrounded by friends.

"Shanaya, you're glowing tonight," Isha commented, her eyes full of mischief. "There's something different about you tonight. I'm not sure if it's the dress or the confidence, but you're shining."

I smiled, feeling a wave of warmth at her words. "I guess I'm just enjoying myself."

Isha raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. "Is it really just the party, or is there something else on your mind? You've been distracted all night."

My smile faltered for a second, but I quickly recovered. "Nothing, just... just enjoying the moment."

But in the midst of all the laughter and chatter, I couldn't help but feel eyes on me again. I turned casually, not expecting to find anything, but there he was—him. The man who had caught my attention the night before, the one whose gaze lingered just a little too long.

He stood on the opposite side of the room, drink in hand, but his eyes were locked on mine. I could feel the heat from his stare all the way across the room. For a moment, time seemed to stop. My heart skipped a beat as I held his gaze, but as soon as I started to walk in his direction, he turned away, disappearing into the crowd.

I shook my head, dismissing it. Focus, Shanaya. Enjoy your night.

---

But even as the night continued, the feeling of being watched, the undeniable tension between us, lingered in the back of my mind. I tried not to let it get to me, but it was impossible to ignore. It was like he had become a shadow in my life, following me even when I wasn't looking.

Later, as the party began to wind down and the music faded into the early hours of the morning, I found myself standing by the balcony, the cool air brushing against my skin. I leaned against the railing, gazing out at the city lights twinkling in the distance. The party inside had quieted down, and the guests were slowly beginning to leave, each one taking their own piece of the night with them.

Isha found me there, her presence comforting. "You okay?" she asked softly, slipping beside me and leaning against the railing.

I nodded, a small smile on my lips. "Just thinking."

"About...?"

I hesitated for a moment, not sure how to put it into words. "About everything. The future, college, the party... and... well, something that happened earlier tonight."

Isha didn't press, but I could tell she was curious. "Want to talk about it?"

I thought for a moment, then shook my head. "Not right now. Maybe later."

But even as I stood there, I knew I couldn't escape the thoughts swirling in my mind. The night had been filled with fun, laughter, and memories to cherish, but a part of me couldn't shake the feeling that something was changing. The mystery man, the way he had looked at me, the way I had felt when our eyes met—it was all too much to ignore.

I turned to Isha, my heart lighter now. "I think I'm ready to head home."

"Let's go then. You've had enough of the spotlight for one night," she teased with a wink.

I laughed, but as I followed her back inside to grab my things, I couldn't shake the thought that this night—the people, the experiences, the glances—was just the beginning of something bigger. And as much as I wanted to focus on the present, I couldn't help but wonder what was waiting for me in the future.

Thank you — for showing up, for caring, and for believing in stories like this. Ashes of Us is more than just a book to me. It’s a piece of my heart stitched together with emotions I’ve lived, dreams I’ve whispered, and wounds I’ve tried to heal through words. Writing this wasn’t easy — because falling in love with characters like Shanaya and Kabir meant opening parts of myself I hadn’t touched in a long time. But knowing that someone out there is reading their story, feeling what they feel, and holding space for their journey — that means the world to me. Every message, every share, every word of encouragement gives this story a heartbeat beyond the pages. I hope Ashes of Us makes you feel seen. I hope it reminds you that grief and love can co-exist. And most of all, i hope it stays with you - even after the final line. With all my love, Vrinda ❤
